Quad
rods are four-strip rods made of four 90-degree-angle strips with more of the
valuable outer culm power fibers. While more fishermen are discovering the
benefits of quad rods in recent years, this is a design that actually goes back
to the 1800s. The design was originated by Hiram Leonard, then popularized by W.
E. Edwards in the 1940s.
These rods are much more difficult to make than hex rods, and with fewer
rodmakers producing them, there are not as many quads in the hands of fishermen.
However, quads are an excellent choice for the serious angler because they can
be very accurate fishing instruments.
Quads are made from wider strips than hex rods, so they cast straighter than
their hex rod counterparts.
Tapers:
There are many Edwards quad tapers available (too many to list), but here is one
of my favorite trout tapers: Sam Carlson 7 1/2' 5-wt. Medium action progressive,
delicate tip. Smooth, sweet. Sam knew what he was doing! One of my favorite
tapers.
